On Illegal Immigrants, American Majority Opposes Obama's Actions

April 27, 2015 - 6:00pm

Americans oppose President Barack Obamas executive action allowing 5 million illegal immigrants to stay in the nation without fear of being deported, a new poll shows.

Rasmussen Reports released a poll of likely voters across the nation on Tuesday which shows a majority of those surveyed -- 56 percent -- are against Obamas actions. Barely a third of those surveyed -- 35 percent -- back Obamas executive actions.

The poll shows only a quarter of those surveyed -- 26 percent -- think Obama should go it alone on immigration and use executive power to ram through his immigration policies. Most voters -- 61 percent -- think Obama should work with Congress on immigration.

Asked if Obama has the power to grant amnesty to millions of illegals without congressional authorization, only 25 percent of those surveyed say he does. Most voters -- 59 percent -- think Obama has overstepped his bounds with his actions on immigration.

Despite this, the poll finds voters are torn about a coalition of states offering a legal challenge to Obama over the immigration actions. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi and 25 other state attorneys general have sued the Obama administration over the matter. Asked about the states legal challenge to Obama on his executive actions on immigration, 43 percent favor it while 39 percent oppose it.

Half of those surveyed -- 50 percent -- think Obamas executive action to allow younger illegal aliens to remain in the country will very likely result in more young immigrants illegally entering the United States this summer. Almost a quarter -- 22 percent -- think it is somewhat likely that Obamas action will lead to more young illegal immigrants entering the nation. Only 4 percent think it is not at all likely Obamas actions will lead to more young illegals crossing the border while 17 percent think it is not very likely that the executive action will lead to more younger illegal immigrants entering the nation.

The poll of 1,000 likely voters across the nation was taken April 19-20 and had a margin of error of +/ 3 percent.
